For a quartet of speech synthesizers. Composed and premiered in 1991. Featuring the speech synthesis of the beloved Mac SE and the earliest DigiDesign hardware around. All sounds were processed with the vintage SoundDesigner and TurboSynth software. A lot of this piece is devoted to exploring the phrasings of the speech synthesizer, particularly when the phrases (from Joyce's Finnegan's Wake and Eliot's Four Quartets) are typed backwards and into things that would be impossible for a human to pronounce.
The work is for 4-channel tape though this version is based on the stereo reduction mix.
