Straw man headed west on a greyhound bus in the winter of 1965
Gonna visit a girl out in Tucson, Arizona for the very last time
Headed out on the road to escape a lonely life
Having second thoughts just beyond the county line
Somewhere East of Oklahoma the deeper questions gained the upper hand
Deep down in his pockets he kind of wished that he had made a better plan
When the bus pulled into Phoenix he got off and walked around
And when he saw the bus departing he didn’t even make a sound
He thought “Well, I don’t need a reason
I won’t even call this time.
It’s better when I’m leaving
Arriving is the hardest part for me.
Arriving is the hardest part but it
always seems a fresh new start when I leave.”
He checked into a hotel room, put his backpack down and he headed out to the Sun
On the Camelback Mountain trail he knew at last he was a man who’d overcome
When the sun went down he got up and walked back down
And he slowly smiled when he knew what he had found.
He thought “Well, I don’t need a reason
I won’t even call this time.
It’s better when I’m leaving
Arriving is the hardest part for me.
Arriving is the hardest part but it
always seems a fresh new start when I leave.”
